Small family of Morristown, Vermont papers, 1822-1932 (bulk: 1850s-1900).

The collection consists mostly of letters sent to the Small family of Morristown, Vermont, from the 1850s through 1900. The collection has been organized by the recipient's name, not the sender, in most cases, and then arranged in chronological order, though many are undated or only give day and month but not the year. Four of the folders in the collection contain letters sent to Nancy Small (1807-1894), a school teacher known familiarly as "Aunt Nancy" who lived for more than eighty years in the same house in Morristown. One of the folders contains letters written by her sister, Laura R. Herrick of Dubuque, Iowa and Minneapolis, Minnesota, while another contains letters from her Herrick nieces and nephews. The remaining two folders contain letters written to her by friends and other relatives, many from her brother-in-law, Nathan Herrick, and cousins from Mont Vernon, New Hampshire. The remainder of the letters in the collection were sent to eleven other members of the Small family. The letters deal mainly with family matters, the weather and health, but virtually nothing about national events or even events outside the family. There are three letters that refer to the Civil War from Sergeant George W. Herrick, Co. B, 9th Minnesota Volunteers, written to his Aunt Nancy, describing conditions around Fort Hanska and the divided politics of Jefferson City, Missouri, where he was stationed. Also included in the collection are several letters that describe life in Dubuque, Iowa and Minneapolis, Minnesota. There are also some farm records of the Morrisville farm and assorted invoices. The collection includes sheets from "The Game of Initials" in which the participants wrote down answers to questions based on the initials in their own names.
